STONEWALL DEMOCRATS OF WNY DENOUNCES DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATE FOR ERIE COUNTY CLERK
NYS Assemblymember Michael Kearns' voting record is homophobic, transphobic
This week, the race in the Democratic Primary for Erie County Clerk began to take shape. NYS Assemblymember Michael Kearns, a registered Democrat, announced that he had received the endorsement of the Erie County Conservative Party.
"Mickey Kearns' voting record is well know to LGBTQ people and families," said Bryan Ball, president of SDWNY. "Since his election to the State Assembly in 2012, Mr. Kearns has voted against the GENDA bill every year, most recently this past month, when GENDA again passed the Assembly with historic levels of support. In addition to voting against the civil rights of transgender New Yorkers, Mr. Kearns has since 2014's introduction of the bill to ban conversion therapy voted against protecting our children. What makes his record even more troubling is his documented past pledges to support LGBTQ civil rights, including a pledge to support the GENDA bill Mr. Kearns made when courting the LGBTQ community for votes in a past Buffalo mayoral primary election. In all his time in office, Mr. Kearns has refused, time and again, to support the civil rights of LGBTQ people, and LGBTQ people should refuse to support him."
Currently, candidates Janique Curry and Steve Cichon are also running in the primary election for Erie County Clerk. SDWNY will hold candidate endorsement interviews for this office in June 2017.
