"In Governor Cuomo, the LGBT community has a leader who has made history like no other," said Bryan Ball, president of SDWNY. "We will have Governor Cuomo forever to thank for his role in the passage of Marriage Equality in NYS. When SDWNY Vice-President Kitty Lambert-Rudd and her wife Cheryle married in Niagara Falls the very moment Marriage Equality became legal in our state, they began a moment of history that has not stopped. And because of Governor Cuomo's action and leadership, countless New York families-- like Kitty and Cheryle's-- are now treated equally under the law. However, our community's civil rights are and need more than Marriage Equality. We count on the Governor's support to finally-- at long last-- pass the Gender Expression Non-Discrimination Act next session, and sign into law the bill that will give transgender New Yorkers long over due protections and civil rights. We look forward to continuing our work with Governor Cuomo on these issues of civil rights, which will also include the bill to ban anti-LGBT conversion therapy for our youth."
Andrew Cuomo has previously received SDWNY's endorsement when he was elected governor in 2010. SDWNY received no outreach from Gov. Cuomo's primary opponent, Zephyr Teachout.
